Risch: UN Human Rights Chief’s Visit to China Could Serve as Propaganda

WASHINTON – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement on UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet’s visit to China this week:

“I am concerned that High Commissioner Bachelet’s visit to China this week will be used by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) as propaganda to promote a false narrative about its human rights record. Bachelet should ensure she meets with actual members of civil society during her visit. In particular, she should visit Uyghurs who have been unjustly detained by the CCP in camps for years, such as Ekpar Asat.

“Once she has returned from China, it is imperative that Bachelet releases the long-overdue report on human rights violations committed by the Chinese government in Xinjiang. The world already knows that China is actively committing a genocide, and it is time for the UN to confirm it with its reporting. Anything short of that will be of grave concern.”
