Risch, Shaheen on Sanctions for Hong Kong “National Security” Crack Down

WASHINGTON- U.S. Senators Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released a statement regarding the announcement that the State Department imposed sanctions on Hong Kong officials responsible for implementing the 2020 National Security Law and 2024 Article 23 Ordinance.

“We support the U.S. Department of State’s recent sanctions on Hong Kong officials responsible for implementing the 2020 National Security Law and 2024 Article 23 Ordinance,” the senators said. “We must continue to hold the Hong Kong authorities accountable for their role in eroding Hong Kong’s autonomy and their abuses against the internationally recognized human rights of Hong Kongers. In addition, these sanctions demonstrate that the U.S. government will push back on the Hong Kong government’s illegal and extraterritorial campaign of transnational repression, including actions that target U.S. citizens and undermine American sovereignty.”

In February 2025, Chairman Risch and Ranking Member Shaheen co-led a bipartisan resolution condemning Beijing’s destruction of Hong Kong’s democracy and rule of law, which passed out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week.
