Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), chairman of the Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues, today met with Venezuelan Commissioner for Foreign Relations Julio Borges, Venezuelan Ambassador to the U.S. Carlos Vecchio, UN Ambassador Miguel Pizarro, and Ad hoc Director Alejandro Grisanti, to discuss continued U.S. support for interim President Juan Guaidó and the Venezuelan people.
“Today we welcomed International Affairs Commissioner Borges and Ambassador Vecchio to discuss a path forward to return democratic rule to Venezuela,” said the senators. “The U.S. has provided more than $400 million in humanitarian aid and taken strong actions to punish individuals and entities responsible for or profiting from the repression and humanitarian tragedy unleashed by the Maduro regime on the Venezuelan people. Our Canadian allies have joined us in this fight, and multiple Latin American governments are gearing up to take their own actions to help Venezuelans end Maduro’s usurpation of power. We once again encourage the European Union to join these international efforts or risk being on the wrong side of history when the Venezuelan people reclaim their freedom.”
