BOISE, Idaho - U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement on the collapse of Assad’s rule in Syria:
“After nearly 50 years of Assad family rule and 13 years of brutal civil war, the Syrian people are waking up to a new reality free from the Assad regime. Russian and Iranian interventions in Syria prolonged this conflict, but both ended in catastrophic failure.
“While this is a time for opportunity, it is also a potentially dangerous time for the region. We must account for Assad’s prisoners, including American Austin Tice. Moving forward, it is imperative the Syrian people choose their next government and Assad faces long-overdue justice for his war crimes.”
