Risch on 10th Anniversary of South Sudan’s Independence

BOISE, Idaho – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement on the 10th anniversary of South Sudan’s independence:

“Today, the people of South Sudan celebrate 10 years of independence. Unfortunately, they have yet to realize the promises of their hard-won struggle due to the selfishness, violence, and corruption of their leaders.

“The United States has walked with the South Sudanese along this journey, and we too need to reflect on our investment and commitment to a democratic, prosperous, and peaceful future for South Sudan. This starts with the expedient nomination and confirmation of a U.S. ambassador to South Sudan, a reevaluation of U.S. assistance to ensure it is not contributing to the maintenance of the status quo, and ensuring our financial commitment to South Sudan is matched by the seriousness of our diplomatic engagement with a range of South Sudanese, regional and international stakeholders. The world’s newest country deserves a brighter decade ahead.”
