WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi:
“I was glad to once again welcome IAEA Director General Grossi to the Capitol today to discuss the most prominent issues facing IAEA and the globe. At the top of the list is Iran’s uranium enrichment to 84% despite its safeguards agreement with IAEA. The IAEA Board of Governors should unequivocally censure Iran for this breach, or risk emboldening the regime.
“We also discussed Russia’s takeover of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. I remain concerned that IAEA has been unable to reach an agreement with Russia and Ukraine to establish a safety zone around the plant, and hope that will be resolved soon.
“Finally, we spoke about the AUKUS agreement and how the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia can best cooperate with the IAEA to continue to uphold the highest nonproliferation standards.
“Director Grossi has resisted immense pressure from malign actors and is an effective leader at the IAEA. I look forward to working with him on these important issues in the coming months.”
