NEWARK, NJ – Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement regarding the latest developments in Ukraine and tomorrow’s NATO Summit in Wales.
“Having just returned yesterday from travel to Estonia, Poland, and Ukraine where I heard from the Presidents of each country on the security crisis in Eastern Europe, I commend President Obama for the commitments he made in his speech today to Ukraine and to our allies who are facing immediate and direct threats from Russia.
“The President was clear that in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, NATO must stand united in its security guarantee for all members. I welcome the President’s support for military training and assistance for Ukraine, and encourage him to expand assistance to include equipment and weapons that will allow Ukrainian soldiers to defend themselves.
“During tomorrow’s NATO Summit in Wales, I also strongly encourage President Obama to work with NATO Members to commit meaningful military support to Ukraine and other Eastern European allies terrorized by Russian aggression. NATO must send an unequivocal message to Russia that all options of assistance to Ukraine and our allies are on the table.”
