Chairman Menendez Statement on the One Year Anniversary of the Attacks on U.S. Diplomatic Facility in Benghazi, Libya

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the statement below on the one-year anniversary of the diplomatic facility attack in Benghazi, Libya.

“One year ago, as our nation paused to honor the September 11th tragedies, we awoke to news that our diplomatic facility in Benghazi was under attack. The loss of four Americans that day, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, cast a dark shadow on an already solemn day. From tragedy, our nation gained strength and we pledged to better protect our diplomatic posts overseas, as well as the brave Americans who represent our nation throughout the world.  They are our ambassadors to the world and we in Congress and throughout this nation are responsible for their safety and security. On this one-year anniversary of the Benghazi tragedy, we pause to honor Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, Glen Doherty, after whom the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has named our Embassy Security bill, and recommit ourselves to strengthening the safety of our diplomatic facilities and security of our Foreign Service personnel.”
