NEWARK, NJ – U.S. Senator and Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Robert Menendez (D-NJ) issued the following statement after meeting with representatives from several prominent Salvadorian-American organizations to discuss the upcoming 2014 Presidential elections in El Salvador.
“In light of the upcoming presidential elections in El Salvador on February 2, I urge El Salvador’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal to take all necessary steps to guarantee that the elections are carried out in a free, fair and transparent manner. It is critical that the Salvadoran people have the utmost degree of confidence in the outcome
As Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, I look forward to working with El Salvador’s next president and all political actors in the country to build upon the strategic partnership that our two countries enjoy.”
The 2014 presidential elections will be a first time that more than 200,000 Salvadorans living abroad -- and specifically here in the United States -- will have a chance to cast a vote to shape the outcome of their nation’s presidential election.
