Washington, DC – Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA) released the following statement after the UN Security Council today unanimously passed a resolution condemning violence by the Syrian Government against its people and authorizing the deployment of monitors to Syria:
"If the Assaad government had misled itself into believing that they had an escape hatch in China and Russia, they had better start thinking anew. Passage of this Security Council Resolution puts the Syrian government on notice: the time for false promises is over, the time to end the violence is now, and time is in short supply. It is clear that the international community has had enough. While I applaud the action at the UN and the effort of Special Envoy Kofi Annan, we are watching what happens next, and we will not tolerate the kind of violence against the civilian population that has made the Syrian government an international pariah."
