Menendez, Colleagues Introduce Resolution Condemning Politically Motivated Imprisonment of Women Activists around the World

WASHINGTON — Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today led a group of his Senate Democratic colleagues in introducing a Senate Resolution decrying the politically motivated imprisonment of women around the world and to call for the immediate release of women who are political prisoners.

“Women around the world take enormous risks to advance human rights, protect democracy, and pursue progress in their communities every day. Because of their efforts, governments have brutalized and unjustly detained many as political prisoners,” Ranking Member Menendez said. “With this Resolution, we once again call for their release and condemn governments' repressive efforts to silence and detain women for exercising universally recognized rights of freedom of assembly, association, and speech. Women activists serve as heroes and role models to all who would fight for justice and human rights, and their voices cannot — and will not — be silenced by the repressive governments who have imprisoned them. As the world confronts the COVID-19 pandemic, their release has only become more urgent.”

Joining Menendez in the Resolution were Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.), Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and Tim Kaine (D-Va.).
