WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Jim Risch (R-ID), Ranking Member and Chair of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after members approved the nomination of Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) to become Secretary of State during a committee business meeting:
“We are glad to have worked in a bipartisan way to ensure that one of our own, Senator Marco Rubio, could be positioned to quickly take the helm of the State Department. The national security of the United States is this committee’s primary focus – and it is to the benefit of our country to have steady leadership in place as soon as possible. We believe that Senator Rubio has the skills, knowledge and experience to lead the department, and his unanimous vote in committee reflects that. We hope to see his nomination pass the full Senate without delay.”
Senator Rubio’s nomination will next move to a vote on the Senate floor.
