Shaheen, Risch on Announcement of Sanctions on Leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Jim Risch (R-ID), Ranking Member and Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, issued the following statement on the Biden Administration’s announcement of sanctions on General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan:

“We welcome yesterday’s imposition of sanctions on General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan— the head of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) —for brutal war tactics, including attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, obstruction of humanitarian aid, and using food as a weapon of war. Women and children have been particularly devastated by the deliberate actions of the authorities in Port Sudan to obstruct the delivery of life-saving aid across the country.

“Sudan is currently experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, marked by famine and genocide. The international community must come together to put in place mechanisms to protect civilians, ensure unfettered delivery of humanitarian aid, end actions by external actors that fuel the conflict, and hold accountable those who have committed atrocities. The people of Sudan deserve to live in dignity, safety and security.”
