WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Jim Risch (R-ID), Ranking Member and Chair of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Senators Pete Ricketts (R-NE) and Chris Coons (D-DE), released the following statement on reports that Thailand may imminently send 48 Uyghur men back to China, where the Chinese government is actively committing genocide against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities.
“These reports are deeply troubling, as these men face torture, imprisonment, and even death upon return to China. The United States has put practical options on the table to resolve this issue in a way that upholds our shared commitment to internationally-recognized human rights. We urge Thai leaders to engage with the United States on those proposals, rather than take this ill-advised step.”
