WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the below statement following the passing of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright:
“I am heartbroken to learn that former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has passed away. As a brilliant mind, revered diplomat, and dear friend, Madeleine was a trailblazer as the first woman to be Secretary of State and devoted public servant.
“She was a champion of democracy and human rights who stood up to dictators and autocrats everywhere. Her contributions as Secretary made the world more prosperous and secure. Her efforts will inspire the United States for generations to come. It was a privilege to know her, and she will be greatly missed. I extend my deepest sympathies to her family in this difficult time.”
