SFRC Chairman Menendez Statement on Putin’s State of the Nation Address, Announced “Suspension” of Russian Participation in New START

WASHINGTON – SFRC Chairman Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) today released the below statement in reaction to Vladimir Putin’s State of the Nation address and announced “suspension” of Russian participation in the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), a rigorous post-Cold War nuclear arms control agreement expiring in the coming years that was designed to limit both Russia’s and the United States’ nuclear arsenals:

“One year ago, Vladimir Putin gave a speech seeking to undermine Ukraine’s independence and nationality in order to justify his full-scale invasion of the country, slated for just a few days later. Today, Putin delivered another myth-filled diatribe, blaming others for his massive strategic blunder in launching this unprovoked and unjustified war, and for the horrifying death, destruction, and bloody crimes he and his troops have since rained on Ukraine.

“Today’s speech and Russia’s ongoing siege demonstrate that Putin is an autocrat and aggressor who has no interest in maintaining international peace and security. I vehemently condemn his announced ‘suspension’ of Russia’s participation in New START—the only arms control agreement between Russia and the United States that remains in force—possibly heralding the end of strategic arms control, which for more than fifty years has stabilized our nations’ nuclear relationship. As we work to avoid such a dangerous outcome—and resulting nuclear arms race—Putin and his cronies should have no doubt that the United States will defend our country and our allies, continuing to support Ukraine for as long as it takes to prevail.”
