Ranking Member Shaheen Welcomes Selection of Joseph Aoun as Lebanon’s President

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement on the selection of a President in Lebanon:

"The selection of Joseph Aoun as President is a significant and momentous occasion for Lebanon. After more than two years of political deadlock, yesterday’s result reflects the will and hope of the Lebanese people to turn the page with a leader who has a long and established record with all Lebanese citizens throughout his career serving in the Lebanese Armed Forces, including as commander since 2017.

"The United States stands firmly with the people of Lebanon in their rightful pursuit of a government that is free from corruption, dedicated to security and prosperity for all of its citizens and committed to regional stability. Congratulations to the Lebanese people on this important step."

Last year, Senator Shaheen worked with Committee Chairs Cardin and Reed to introduce the Preventing the Undermining of Lebanon’s Sovereignty and Economy (PULSE) Act that reaffirms the United States’ long-term commitment to stand with the people of Lebanon and its democratic institutions, including robust support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and ongoing efforts to address the dire humanitarian situation. In recent months, Shaheen voiced concern about the situation in Lebanon and issued a statement when the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah was announced.
