Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on the Nomination of Representative Elise Stefanik Clearing Committee, Now Heads to Full Floor Vote

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement following Committee approval of the nomination of Representative Elise Stefanik to become Ambassador to the United Nations (UN):

“Whether fighting the spread of infectious diseases, stemming the flow of fentanyl that kills Americans, combating transnational crime that cost Americans billions of dollars or negotiating political settlements to dangerous conflicts, the work of the United Nations directly affects Americans all across this country. While I may not agree with Representative Stefanik on every policy, I appreciated her commitment during her nomination hearing to personally review the United Nations Population Fund, the UN Agency mandated to provide family planning, maternal care and to respond to gender-based violence. As our nation faces challenges around the world, I am deeply concerned by the Trump Administration’s decision to freeze foreign aid, issue stop-work orders and fire critical staff across our foreign policy and national security agencies. These actions could have deadly consequences and weaken our national security. If confirmed, I look forward to working with Representative Stefanik on these and many other critical national security priorities.”

Last week, Ranking Member Shaheen secured a commitment from Representative Stefanik to review lifesaving women’s health programs at her nomination hearing.
