Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Resignation Announcement

“Canada remains one of our closest allies, and I look forward to working with Canada’s next Prime Minister to address the global challenges our nations face,” said Ranking Member Shaheen.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, expressed her gratitude to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his leadership and close cooperation with the United States following his announcement that he intends to resign as Liberal leader.

"I thank Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his partnership with the United States during his time in office. The United States remains committed to our strong bilateral relationship with Canada, rooted in shared democratic values and a longstanding history of cooperation. Canada remains one of our closest allies, and I look forward to working with Canada’s next Prime Minister to address the global challenges our nations face."

Senator Shaheen has long championed a strong U.S.-Canada relationship, including trade initiatives that are vital to New Hampshire's economy. Through her legislative work, including her 2016 small business trade amendment, she has advanced collaboration in education, energy, and manufacturing between the two nations. In 2020, she supported the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and has consistently advocated for fair trade practices. In 2018, Senator Shaheen opposed the Trump Administration’s Section 232 tariffs on Canadian goods. In recent months, she has urged the Canadian government to increase their NATO defense spending.
