WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement after hosting Japanese Ambassador to the United States Tomita Koji in the Capitol and presenting him with a Senate condolence book following the assassination of Former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
“On behalf of the United States Senate, I was honored to entrust Ambassador Tomita with this book expressing our condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister Abe,” Chairman Menendez said. “Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, Mr. Abe’s commitment to strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance was transformational, and his strategic vision to bolster global security made our world a safer, more cooperative, and more prosperous place. It is not often that the Senate offers a condolence book like this. Our doing so today speaks to the depth of feeling that we have, Democrats and Republicans alike, for Prime Minister Abe and for the U.S.-Japan Alliance. Our hearts are with the Prime Minister’s family and the people of Japan.”
