WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement after meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in the Capitol:
“It was a pleasure to welcome President Ghani and Dr. Abdullah to Washington today. Their many years of engagement with Foreign Relations Committee members and staff are not only deeply appreciated, but are a testament to our enduring partnership and shared commitment to stability and prosperity in Afghanistan,” Chairman Menendez said. “I was glad to express my emphatic support for the democratically-elected Afghan government, and look forward to working with the Afghan delegation to confront the significant challenges posed by the Taliban, specifically to the wellbeing and safety of women and girls, and to charting the U.S.’ future role of support for the country.”
