NEWARK, N.J. – Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement today on the passing of Tunisian President Beiji Caid Essebsi.
“I offer my heartfelt condolences to the people of Tunisia and President Essebsi’s family as they mourn his death.
“President Essebsi will forever hold a unique place in Tunisian history as its first democratically elected president. Following a decades-long career in public service, President Essebsi will be remembered for helping steward his country though a tumultuous but inspiring political transition, preserving the promise of democracy for generations of Tunisians to come. His legacy will be the lasting democratic republic to which he dedicated the last years of his life and the resilient people of his country. The United States’ commitment to the people of Tunisia and their democratic system, security and prosperity remains as strong as ever.”
