Corker Statement on Committee Consideration of Authorization for the Use of Military Force Against ISIS

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bob Corker, (R-Tenn.), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations committee, made the following statement today regarding the committee’s consideration of legislation authorizing the use of military force against ISIS.

“We know the legislation the committee considered today is going nowhere,” said Corker, who opposed the legislation that passed on a party-line vote. “I think it would be stronger for our country if the administration would work with Congress on an authorization that can actually pass the House and Senate and help us succeed in the effort against ISIS.”

Senator Corker further noted the lack of clarity from the administration regarding the U.S. strategy to defeat ISIS in Syria when there is no plan for how to transition President Bashar al-Assad from power.

“I don’t think there is a member of Congress who could explain how the administration plans to go about degrading and destroying ISIS in Syria,” he said.
