CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – In response to violent clashes between pro-Russian militants and Ukrainian security forces in eastern Ukraine and President Obama’s comments today at the White House, U.S. Senator Bob Corker, R-Tenn., ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he is “deeply concerned” about the Obama administration’s “tepid and hesitant” response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
“I am deeply concerned that the administration continues to be so tepid and hesitant in using impactful sanctions even though they are fully aware of the aggressive destabilization Russia is causing in Ukraine,” said U.S. Senator Bob Corker. “Imposing sanctions after the damage has been done doesn’t seem to be constructive in yielding the right outcome.”
On Wednesday, Senator Corker and 22 Senate Republicans introduced new legislation providing a strategic U.S. response to Russian aggression in Europe, which threatens regional security and prosperity that is critical for maintaining economic growth in the United States.
“Our legislation takes a three-prong approach to prevent the situation from becoming far worse. This bill will strengthen NATO, impose tough sanctions to deter Russia and support non-NATO allies of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia,” said Corker.
In addition to reinvigorating the NATO alliance and imposing new sanctions, the Russian Aggression Prevention Act provides $100 million worth of direct military assistance to Ukraine, including anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons and small arms, based on a needs and capabilities assessment of the Ukrainian armed forces. It also encourages the sharing of intelligence with Ukraine.
