WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement regarding the deteriorating situation in Sudan and the need for proactive U.S. leadership to address the crisis.
“Five months into the Sudan conflict, the humanitarian toll continues to grow as both belligerents have shown insufficient commitment to protect civilian life. Particularly concerning are the atrocities committed by the Wagner-backed Rapid Support Forces, formerly known as the Janjaweed, to include ethnic motived killing in Darfur that echoes the genocide twenty years ago. The Biden Administration must prioritize working with our partners and relevant actors in the region to mediate a politically sustainable resolution to this crisis.”
