Chair Cardin Welcomes Senate Passage of Resolution Calling for Evan Gershkovich's Release

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement on the Senate passage of his resolution urging the immediate release of Evan Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal reporter arrested in Moscow more than a year ago.

“Evan’s reporting informed Russians and people around the world about Russia’s unprovoked war in Ukraine, and opposition to it by many Russians. His unjust and ongoing imprisonment underscores just how afraid Vladimir Putin is of the truth. Rather than end his illegal war, Putin chooses to silence voices providing the facts about his aggression. In doing so, the Kremlin has stolen Evan from his family, his friends, and his country. The passage of this resolution calls for his immediate release, as well as others wrongfully detained in Russia, including Paul Whelan, Alsu Kurmasheva, and Vladimir Kara-Murza. I stand with Evan. Journalism is not a crime.”
