Chair Cardin Statement on World Press Freedom Day

Statement Plain - Option 1 (25)

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement commemorating World Press Freedom Day, which takes place on May 3, 2024.

“An independent press is an essential part of a free and fair society, and a cornerstone of democracy,” said Chair Cardin. “Around the world, journalists and members of the media provide trusted information to the public, strengthen civil society, and help hold governments and leaders accountable. Tragically, too many journalists continue to face persecution, unjust detention, threats, and even death for daring to speak the truth and investigate facts. As we strive to uphold democratic principles and advance human rights in this country and around the world, we have a duty to unequivocally champion respect for freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the protection of journalists. On World Press Freedom Day, I commend the brave journalists around the world and reaffirm America’s global leadership to protecting freedom of the press everywhere.”
