Chair Cardin Statement on Elections in Indonesia

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement on recent elections in Indonesia.

“I congratulate the people of Indonesia for their elections on February 14. The Indonesian people’s commitment to a peaceful democratic process is a cornerstone of our shared values. As the official election results are tallied, I stand firmly with the Indonesian people in their continued efforts to safeguard human rights, strengthen justice and the rule of law, promote political inclusivity, and enhance transparent governance. It is imperative that Indonesia’s new leadership prioritize these goals as they are essential for a resilient democracy that serves the needs of all Indonesians and are foundational to deepening the U.S.-Indonesia partnership. I look forward to continuing our shared work to advance a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.”
