Chair Cardin Statement on Announcement of John Podesta as Senior Advisor to the President on International Climate Policy

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, issued the following statement on the selection of John Podesta to be senior advisor to the president on international climate policy.

“John Podesta has played an integral role in cementing the Biden-Harris administration as the most effective in history at addressing the climate crisis. There is no one better suited than him to help continue developing and implementing innovative policies to keep U.S. leadership on course to grow our economy, revamp our industrial sectors, and cut emissions. As world leaders look to the United States to adopt meaningful and proven climate strategies, I have no doubt that Mr. Podesta – one of the chief architects of the Biden Clean Energy and Industrial Innovation Plan – is the right person to strengthen our global partnerships and take on this urgent challenge.

“As I’ve said before – including most recently at COP28 in Dubai – the United States must stay engaged on climate leadership to continue delivering actionable solutions that protect our planet and future generations to come. I applaud President Biden for selecting Mr. Podesta, and look forward to working with him in this new role.”
