Chair Cardin Commends the Moldovan People for Reelection of President Maia Sandu

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after Moldovans voted on Sunday to reelect pro-Western President Maia Sandu.

“The Moldovan people’s reelection of President Sandu affirms their commitment to democracy and transparency. Under President Sandu’s steadfast leadership, Moldova will continue to combat corruption and work towards a prosperous future for all Moldovans.

“Despite significant efforts by the Kremlin to undermine Moldovan democracy, the unwavering will of its citizens has prevailed. President Sandu’s reelection and the recent vote in favor of joining the European Union send a clear message: the Moldovan people are committed to a future of freedom, security, and closer integration with Europe. I will continue to press leaders at Apple, Meta, and Alphabet to act decisively against foreign interference, ensuring that Moldovan citizens have access to fair, unbiased information as they shape their own futures.”
