Chair Cardin Closely Watching Martial Law Developments in South Korea

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement regarding President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law in South Korea and the National Assembly’s subsequent 190-0 vote to lift the declaration:

"The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is closely monitoring the situation in South Korea, a vital U.S. ally. We acknowledge the National Assembly’s actions and reaffirm our shared commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law. The resolve of South Korea’s people and the resilience of its institutions will undoubtedly guide them through this challenging time."
