WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
“The ceasefire agreement that ends hostilities in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah for an initial phase of 60 days marks a vital and productive step, but hopefully not the last. I also welcome the commitments by the parties to extend and sustain the peace consistent with the international community’s demands as enshrined in UN Security Council Resolutions 1701 and 1559. The Biden administration’s exceptional leadership in brokering this deal demonstrates the power of diplomacy in fostering security and stability for the people of Lebanon and Israel. All parties must fully implement their obligations.
“This ceasefire provides people the ability to finally return to their homes without fear. Lebanon’s Parliament can and must select a president free from corruption and Iranian influence. The United States remains committed to ensuring the ceasefire holds with strong and ongoing support for the Lebanese Armed Forces—the true defenders of Lebanon’s sovereignty and people—and for Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism.
“It is my hope that this moment also opens a meaningful path toward resolving the conflict in Gaza, providing lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. I look forward to our work in the U.S. Senate to support the implementation of this agreement upon our return. Our country will continue to prioritize peace, security, stability, and prosperity for Israel, Lebanon, and the broader Middle East.”
