Cardin Statement Recognizing May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement recognizing May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

“We recognize the month of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and celebrate the many contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) to the U.S,” said Senator Cardin.  “The AAPI community draws from a variety of distinct cultures, each of which has enriched American society and challenged our Nation to be better. Through hard work and a steadfast commitment to American ideals, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders have strengthened this country - as leaders, innovators, activists, artists and trailblazers.”

“As the former chairman and current ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific, I have been closely engaged on issues affecting the Asia-Pacific American community and their families abroad.  I will continue to work on behalf of this community, especially on issues of human rights, security and peace. This month we honor Asian-Pacific Americans – in my home state of Maryland and from around the country – that have influenced and shaped the U.S. into the great nation that it is today.”
