WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement Wednesday after the deadly attack on an International Committee of the Red Cross convoy in Jowzjan province, Afghanistan, by suspected ISIL fighters:
“I am deeply concerned about the attack and offer my sincere condolences to the families of the six aid workers killed and two who remain missing at this time. This despicable attack on individuals who were selflessly bringing much-needed relief to Afghan civilians impacted by snowstorms and avalanches is yet another reminder of ISIL’s depravity and callous disregard for the plight of civilians.
“The attack highlights an alarming trend: the rise in the deliberate targeting of humanitarian workers globally. It is also a reminder of the bravery of humanitarian workers like those targeted today, who have dedicated themselves to improving the lot of fellow Afghans and their country’s future despite grave risks. The United States and the international community must step up and put respect for humanitarian access at the top of its priorities. This must go beyond words of condemnation and instead include action to hold perpetrators – governments and terrorists alike – accountable.
“The United States must also remain committed to supporting the people of Afghanistan and the Afghan government’s efforts to counter violent extremist groups and establish security, justice, and the peaceful rule of law across the country.”
