WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement Friday after Mexico and the United States worked to extradite Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman to New York to stand trial:
“The extradition of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán is the result of President Obama's continuous effort to build a deeper partnership with Mexico, one that advances both of our national interests. El Chapo and the Sinaloa Cartel have waged a campaign of ruthless violence against the Mexican people and trafficked a staggering quantity of illegal drugs into the United States that have taken the lives of far too many Americans.
"Guzman's extradition should serve as a reminder that the United States can achieve more through sustained diplomacy and bilateral cooperation than antagonism and insults.”
