“A nearly united Congress is poised to send President Putin a clear message on behalf of the American people and our allies, and we need President Trump to help us deliver that message.”
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement Saturday after the House of Representatives posted its version of sanctions legislation related to Russia, Iran and North Korea:
“My preference over the last month had been for the House to take up and adopt the legislation that passed the Senate 98-2, however I welcome the House bill which was the product of intense negotiations. I believe the proposed changes to the bill have helped to clarify the intent of Members of Congress as well as express solidarity with our closest allies in countering Russian aggression and holding the Kremlin accountable for their destabilizing activities. I want to thank my bipartisan, bicameral colleagues for their efforts throughout this process. A nearly united Congress is poised to send President Putin a clear message on behalf of the American people and our allies, and we need President Trump to help us deliver that message.”
