60th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program in Thailand

U.S. Senators have introduced a resolution recognizing the 60th anniversary of the Fulbright Program in Thailand. Introducing the resolution were U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Dick Lugar (R-IN), Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA), East Asian Subcommittee Chairman Jim Webb (D-VA), and Intelligence Committee Vice-Chairman Kit Bond (R-MO).
 
The full text reads:
 
Recognizing the 60th Anniversary of the Fulbright Programin Thailand.
 
Whereas 2008 was the 175th anniversary of relations betweenthe Kingdom of Thailand and the United States;
            Whereas the Fulbright Program is sponsored by the Bureauof Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Department ofState;
                Whereas the Fulbright Program currently operates in over150 countries;
            Whereas the Thailand - United States Educational Foundation(TUSEF) was established by a formal agreement in1950;
            Whereas 2010 is the 60th anniversary of the Fulbright Programpartnership with the Kingdom of Thailand;
                Whereas approximately 1600 Fulbright students and scholarsfrom Thailand have studied, conducted research, or lecturedin the United States;
            Whereas 800 Fulbright grantees from the United States conductedresearch or gave lectures in Thailand from 1951through 2008;
            Whereas active consideration is being given to increasing theemphasis of the Fulbright Program in southern Thailand,including through the Fulbright English TeachingAssistantship Program; and
            Whereas the United States Government supports additionalprograms in Thailand in the areas of education, democracypromotion, good governance, and public diplomacy:
           
Now, therefore, be it Resolved,
            That the Senate encourages the Presidentto maintain and expand interaction with the Kingdom ofThailand in ways which facilitate close coordination andpartnership in the areas of education and cultural exchange throughout all of Thailand, including the southernprovinces.
