Chairman Risch Announces Upcoming Committee Activities Related to Saudi Arabia and Khashoggi Investigation

Washington, D.C. -- Ahead of upcoming briefings and committee activities related to Saudi Arabia and the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-ID), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, made the following statement:

“The administration has been in constant communication with me regarding the ongoing investigation into the horrific killing of Jamal Khashoggi. To date, they have been forthcoming with intelligence information in that I have received a significant number of briefings and had numerous conversations with the White House, State Department, and intelligence agencies.

“Pursuant to the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, the administration determined 17 individuals to be responsible for Mr. Khashoggi’s death, and I appreciated their work to implement sanctions against those involved. This is an ongoing investigation and our work is not yet complete. Members of the committee are anxious to hear, and deserve to hear, from the administration directly as this investigation continues. The administration has committed they will oblige.

"To that end, the Foreign Relations Committee will hold a classified briefing with the administration this week in relation to the Global Magnitsky sanctions. Additionally, we will hold a classified briefing on Monday regarding the ongoing conflict in Yemen, and I will convene our first full committee hearing on Wednesday. The hearing will broadly cover the role of the United States in the world today and will be an opportunity for members of the committee to discuss this and any other issues publicly with the full committee present.”
